Shanghai Pudong New Area Cultural Radio and Television Center will soon be completed and put into use!
The Shanghai Pudong New Area Cultural Broadcasting and Television Center, which was designed by Ruimeng Design, will soon be completed and put into use!
The project is located in Zhoukang District, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, on the west side of Luoshan Road, north of Xiuyan Road, with a site of 37 acres. In an international competition in 2010, the “Media Dragon” project designed by Rimage won the first place and became the implementation plan.
The main functions of the Pudong Broadcasting Center include studio area, TV business rooms, broadcasting business rooms, broadcasting and TV common business rooms, limited network center business and supporting rooms, administrative offices, conference center, building mechanical and electrical systems supporting rooms, parking garage and the building’s own service space – elevators, toilets, etc. The main functions of the Pudong Broadcasting Center are divided into four floors, which are mainly used as studios, performing arts rooms, etc. The upper floors are set up as office space.
In terms of functional area division, the space on the 4th floor of the ground floor is mainly used as large and small studios, performing arts rooms, etc. The upper floors are set up as office space, in which the TV business rooms, broadcasting business rooms and the rooms shared by the two are arranged in the middle of the tower; the conference, administrative offices, etc. are arranged in the upper part of the tower. The first floor is used for parking and building mechanical and electrical rooms. The second basement level is a pure garage.
The whole program is inspired by the holistic image of the square box: the designers wanted to build a box large enough to hold all the required functions and cut into it to open up the most public areas of the building, such as entrances, corridors, stairwells, etc. These cut-outs were then placed in the central part of the tower. These cut-outs are then placed around the façade, their presence accentuating the building’s openings and enticing visitors to discover what is hidden within.
The design of the building skin is inspired by the concept of pixels on a television screen, with square panels symbolizing the pixels, a design that is in keeping with the identity of the Cultural Radio and Television Center. In the design of the façade, the squares symbolizing “pixels” are divided into three categories according to the distance they protrude from the façade: 20 cm, 60 cm and 100 cm. The pushing and pulling out of the “pixel” creates a variety of dynamic façade shapes that energize the entire building, like a churning dragon that snakes its way up from the northwest of the site and into the sky.
The concept of “pixels” is not only expressed in the design of the façade, but is also continued in the design of the landscape. The grid of windows and displays on the façade continues to the ground and plaza, transforming into paving tiles, turf, and diverse landscaping on the site, mirroring the theme of the entire building, and making the building more vibrant and alive.
